Tasks
(NPC tasks)
Tasks are errands from NPCs spread around the world. You talk to the NPC to accept the task, do what it asks (almost always defeating Pokémon, sometimes handing in an item) and go back to the same NPC for the reward. There are 167, one per NPC, and 35 of them give you a Pokémon.
How they work
Step 1:
Talk to the NPC and accept the task in its dialogue.
Step 2:
Open the Tasks panel (Tasks button on the top bar) to see how much is left.
Step 3:
Complete every objective: the defeats and, if the task asks for it, handing in an item.
Step 4:
Go back to the same NPC to hand in the task and get the reward.
A short task: Aaron, in Kanto, asks you to defeat 40 Voltorb and 20 Magnemite and gives 30,000 XP. A long one: Aldric, from the Shiny Tasks, asks you to defeat 1,500 Relicanth and 25 Shiny Relicanth, and to hand in 1 greenish fossil fins. He pays in two stages: 1,000,000 XP and 5 Bubble Gum in Stage 1, and a Shiny Relicanth in a Tale Ball in Stage 2.
Tasks panel (Task Tracker)
It opens with the Tasks button on the top bar; the window is titled Task Panel.
It groups your tasks by NPC: portrait and name, the Pokémon you have to defeat, how many are left and a mark once that objective is done.
Next to each NPC’s portrait there is a target icon (its tooltip reads «Click to see where this NPC alives»). Click it to ask the game where that NPC is; it only works for the tasks you have active.
The counter goes down with each valid Pokémon you defeat. When it reaches 0, go to the NPC to hand the task in.
The panel only tracks progress: accepting the task, handing it in and getting the reward are always done by talking to the NPC.
It also tracks NPC tasks that are not in this page’s list, such as Alfred’s in Cerulean (Shiny Feraligatr and Shiny Blastoise), which is part of the Kanto GYMs, or Dr. Oliveira’s task to defeat Ditto. Linked Tasks have their own separate panel.
Objectives and rewards
What a task can ask for: defeating a number of one Pokémon (or its Shiny), beating one specific Pokémon, handing in an item, or catching a Pokémon and handing it to the NPC.
A task with several hand-ins pays in stages. In the 35 two-stage tasks, Stage 1 gives XP and Bubble Gum, and Stage 2 gives the Pokémon.
When the reward is a Pokémon, the list says which Poké Ball it comes in: «Shiny Relicanth in a Tale Ball».
18 Hoenn tasks give XP, Medal Box and «+5 Hazard progress in Hoenn», a reward for the Hazard system.
Kinds of task
Kanto and Johto
24 tasks ask you to defeat 300 Pokémon of one species and 1 of its Shiny (or 150 each of two species and 1 Shiny of each). They give 500,000 XP and 2 Bubble Gum. Example: Aurora, 300 Cloyster and 1 Shiny Cloyster.
Hoenn
62 tasks ask for 1,500 to 2,500 defeats in total: of one species (Diego: 2,000 Castform), of several stages of one evolution line (Adriano: 300 Electrike and 1,500 Manectric) or of a pair (Bianca: 750 Minun and 750 Plusle). They give 3,000,000 XP, 5 Special Bubble Gum and 450 Mighty Token. Hoenn opens with Hoenn Access.
Hazard
18 Hoenn tasks ask for 30 Shiny Pokémon defeats in total, from 1 to 7 species (Voltrix: 30 Shiny Manectric; Calder: 15 Shiny Camerupt and 15 Shiny Torkoal). They give 5,000,000 XP, 10 Medal Box and +5 Hazard progress in Hoenn.
Shiny Tasks
31 tasks ask for 1,500 defeats of one species, 25 of its Shiny and 1 item handed in. Stage 1: 1,000,000 XP and 5 Bubble Gum. Stage 2: the Shiny of that species in a specific Ball. The exception is Heinrich: he asks for 1,500 Aerodactyl and 1 Old Amber, and gives an Aerodactyl.
Exceptions
Nolan (Kanto) and Quill (Johto) are short two-stage tasks: 100 defeats, 1 Shiny and 1 item. Stage 1 gives 100,000 XP and 2 Bubble Gum; Stage 2, Shiny Tangela in a Janguru Ball and Shiny Qwilfish in a Sora Ball. Blaze and Wanda (Johto) follow the Shiny Tasks pattern.
Fazendeiro Carl (Johto) is the biggest task: defeat 1,300 Houndoom, beat Mega Houndoom and catch and hand in 1 Miltank. It gives 20,000,000 XP, 50 Alliance Ball, 50 Yume Ball, 4 Enhanced Normal Stone, 20 Moomoo Milk and access to Moomoo Milk production.
Kanto and Johto tasks with their own rewards: Alexander (5 Pidgey and 5 Spearow) gives 10,000 XP and 100 Ultra Potion; Ava (150 Exeggutor), 100,000 XP and 250 Revive; Syrphyna (750 Charizard), 500,000 XP, 1 Bubble Gum and 15 Magu Ball; Sofia (10 Oddish), 15,000 XP and 20 Ultra Ball; Charlotte, 25,000 XP and 1 Hazelnut Easter Egg.
Astrid, the only one in the «Other» group, asks for 50 Leafeon, 300 Venusaur and 300 Meganium, and gives 500,000 XP.
