Poké Balls
(Catching and brokes)
Every Ball you throw to catch a Pokémon counts as a broke. The Ball you pick changes your catch chance: some multiply it more than others, Elemental Balls work better against certain types, and with Ultra and Elemental Balls, the Balls you’ve already thrown at that species count in your favor.
Each Ball’s ratio
The ratio is each Ball’s catch multiplier: the higher it is, the easier the catch. The Merit column tells you whether the Ball benefits from the ones you’ve already thrown at that species (see Brokes and merit).
| Ball | Ratio | Merit |
|---|---|---|
| Alliance Ball | ×5 | No |
| Elemental Balls (9) | ×5 | Yes |
| Ultra Ball | ×4 | Yes |
| Premier Ball | ×4 | No |
| Heavy Ball | — | — |
| Fast Ball | — | — |
| Poké Ball, Great Ball, Super Ball, Safari Ball | — | — |
In practice, from best to worst: the Elemental Ball for the Pokémon's type, the Ultra Ball, the Alliance Ball and the Premier Ball.
Which Ball to use for each type
Each of the nine Elemental Balls works better against two types. Find the type of the Pokémon you want to catch and use the Ball in its row:
| Pokémon type | Ball |
|---|---|
Normal
| Yume Ball |
Fire
| Magu Ball |
Water
| Net Ball |
Grass
| Janguru Ball |
Electric
| Tinker Ball |
Ice
| Sora Ball |
Fighting
| Dusk Ball |
Poison
| Janguru Ball |
Ground
| Magu Ball |
Flying

Bug
| Net Ball |
Rock
| Dusk Ball |
Ghost
| Moon Ball |
Dragon
| Tale Ball |
Fairy
| Tale Ball |

Note: Heavy Ball works better on very heavy Pokémon and Fast Ball on very fast ones. Each Pokémon’s page shows under “Traits” whether it’s Heavy or Fast.
How to catch
To catch a wild Pokémon, defeat it and throw an empty Ball on its body. If the Ball fails, it is spent anyway and adds a broke; keep throwing until you get it.
Throwing Balls with one key
Drag your Balls into an action bar slot. The «Assign Object to Action Button» window opens.
Pick the «Smart Use» mode and press «Ok»: the Ball will be used on whatever is under the mouse cursor on the map.
Give it a key (right-click the slot → «Assign Hotkey») and set it to «On Key Press».
In the hunt, move the mouse over the bodies and press the key: you throw a Ball at each one without dragging anything.
When you catch a Pokémon, the «Congratulations, you caught a X!» window opens, with the experience you earned if any. Close it with «Ok».
Brokes and merit
Every Ball you throw at a species adds a broke to your counter for that species, and that counter is your merit. Ultra and Elemental Balls make use of it: if you’ve already thrown 500 Balls at a Pokémon, your next Ultra Ball is thrown with the merit of 501 brokes, so the more you’ve thrown, the better. Alliance and Premier Balls don’t use it (each one is thrown as if it were your first), but they still add to the counter.
Example: you’ve thrown 1,000 Alliance or Premier Balls at a Pokémon and throw one more. It depends on which Ball it is:
Ball 1,001: Alliance or Premier
It’s thrown as if it were your first: it gets nothing from the 1,000 before it.
Ball 1,001: Ultra or Elemental
It’s thrown with the merit of 1,001 brokes: it benefits from every Ball before it, Alliance and Premier included.
Max Brokes per tier
Max Brokes is the benchmark broke count for catching a shiny of each tier. The more brokes you pile up on a shiny, the easier it is to catch, but reaching its Max Brokes doesn’t guarantee the catch. It only applies to shinies; regular Pokémon have no Max Brokes.
Example: Shiny Charizard is T1, so its Max Brokes is 1,280. If you’re at 900 brokes, you’re 380 short.
| Tier | Max Brokes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Legendary | 22,535 | Shiny Gengar |
| Ultra Rare | 9,400 | Shiny Gardevoir |
| Super Rare | 3,500 | Shiny Arcanine |
| T1 | 1,280 | Shiny Charizard |
| T2 | 900 | Shiny Starmie |
| T3 | 700 | Shiny Golduck |
| T4 | 600 | Shiny Pikachu |
| T5 | 400 | Shiny Bulbasaur |
| T6 | 200 | Shiny Magikarp |
| Mythic | — | Shiny Dragonite |
Each shiny’s page shows its tier and its Max Brokes.
Critical Capture
With your Guild’s Critical Capture bonus, any Ball you throw can land a critical capture, and that Ball has double the chance to catch. Hover the bonus icon in the Guild’s Buffs tab to see the chance it gives you.
Pokémon Brokes panel
Press Ctrl+T (or open your Profile from the top bar) and pick “Pokémon Brokes”. The Pokéball Brokes window opens.
Search for the Pokémon by name. Each row shows how many Balls of each kind you’ve thrown at it and the total.
You can sort the list by Pokédex number, by how many kinds of Ball you’ve used or by total, and mark your favorites.
Hit a Pokémon’s track button and then “Open Tracker”: the Brokes Tracker keeps its brokes in view while you hunt.
“Show all Pokéball” also lists the Balls you haven’t thrown at it yet.
Each row has a button to copy its brokes and another to open the Pokémon in the Pokédex.
From chat, !pokeball "Name tells you how many Balls, and which kinds, you’ve used on that species. For a shiny, use its full name: !pokeball "Shiny Charizard.
Other catch bonuses
Prey: the Catch Chance bonus gives +30% catch chance against the species you pick. It doesn’t work on its shiny version.
Medals: each Medal can give you a Catch or Shiny Catch bonus (or a penalty).
Catch Boosters, such as Guarana Soda (+200% for 30 min, doesn’t work on shinies) or Salmon Temaki (+30% for 1 h). You’ll find all of them on the Buffs page.
!buffs shows the catch bonuses you have active.
Where to get Balls
When you start, grab the free Starter Box from the Diamond Store (Character category, no cost, one per character): it has 250 Ultra Balls, plus 150 Revives and 300 Medicines (see Health Items).
The five basic Balls are sold by NPC shops (see NPC Trade):
| Ball | NPC price |
|---|---|
| Poké Ball | 5 Pokédollars |
| Great Ball | 20 Pokédollars |
| Safari Ball | 20 Pokédollars |
| Super Ball | 50 Pokédollars |
| Ultra Ball | 130 Pokédollars |
The rest aren’t sold by NPCs. Elemental Balls, Heavy Ball, Fast Ball, Premier Ball and Alliance Ball come from the Diamond Store and the Game Pass, and you can buy any of them from other players on the Market. Elemental, Heavy, Fast and Premier Balls are also in the Online Shop, and some show up in the Calendar. Each Ball’s page lists everywhere you can get it.
The level Achievements also give you Balls:
| Level | Balls |
|---|---|
| 20 | 100× Super Ball, 3× Premier Ball |
| 40 | 100× Ultra Ball, 5× Premier Ball |
| 60 | 300× Ultra Ball, 10× Premier Ball |
| 80 | 500× Ultra Ball, 20× Premier Ball |
| 100 | 500× Ultra Ball, 25× Premier Ball |
| 220 | 20× Alliance Ball |
| 250 | 30× Alliance Ball |
| 300 | 50× Alliance Ball |
The Linked Tasks also give Balls the first time you complete each one. Tasks 1 to 16 give 20 to 320 Ultra Balls; 17 to 76 (Wildscape Hunter), 10 Elemental Balls that match the Pokémon they ask for (76 also gives 100 Premier Balls); and 77 to 150 (Hoenn Hunter), 10 Alliance Balls and 10 Premier Balls.
The “Ball Adept” Achievements ask you to use 5,000 Balls of one kind and give you that Ball’s Backpack (the Great Backpack for the Great Ball, for example). There’s one for every Ball, Friend Ball included.
In the Game Pass Poké Ball missions, throwing the requested Ball is enough; you don’t need to catch anything.
